Dana Campbell: IT Manager, Slack

A deep dive with Dana, IT Manager at Slack.

What do you ACTUALLY do?
I enable folks to do their best work providing a world-class IT experience.

What types of devices do you support?
We support all flavors, shapes, and sizes – pick your poison.

What’s your favorite piece of tech?
I can do 80% of my job from my palm of my hand making my iPhone X something I can’t be without day-to-day.

What tools or apps are most important to your job?
My monitor is split between Slack, Chrome, Things & Zoom.

Do you prefer hands-on, or troubleshooting from afar?
I prefer to be hands-on and communicate in-person, but being a global organization has forced me to effectively communicate remotely (Zoom helps.)

Favorite thing about your IT environment?
Hands down, my team.

Thing you’d most like to change about it?
The inevitable red tape that comes with a rapidly growing and maturing company. Coupa is my arch nemesis.

What’s on your desk?
Two monitors – one for spreadsheets the other for my top apps (see above), some dongles, plants, and most importantly, tequila.

What was your proudest professional moment?
Co-founding organizations promoting IT knowledge sharing and community – Macbrained & IT Think Tank.

Most cringeworthy request?
I overheard someone recently requesting to install Internet Explorer (on their Mac). Yikes

Do you stay hydrated at work?
I’m fueled by copious amounts of La Croix and tea.

CLI or GUI?
Both, but mostly GUI these days.

DIY or turnkey?
Depends – I’m all for turnkey when it makes sense, but it’s rare. Most of the time, especially in fast-growing organizations, solutions are always going to be custom built.
