A deep dive with Alex, IT Tech Support Lead at Shutterstock.

What do you ACTUALLY do?
Automating and making processes painless and easy as possible for users. Coming from 7.5 years in Apple retail, I’ve come to admire making things dead simple. Oh, and help users when they need it 🙂

What types of devices do you support?
I mainly support macOS with a few Linux and Windows machines here and there.

What’s your favourite piece of tech?
My Mac. It’s all I need to get practically everything done.

What tools or apps are most important to your job?
Jamf Pro, Okta, Google, Slack and our good old friend Jira.

Do you prefer hands-on, or troubleshooting from afar?
We have roughly 1000 employees using Macs split across 10 offices, leaving 200 that I support directly. Helping users directly is always the easy way out, and I’m guilty of that. Remote troubleshooting also requires asking open ended questions to help you understand and narrow down the issue. Let’s be honest, we’ve all seen the “my cursor keeps moving without me touching the trackpad” issue (aka connected mouse in a bag).

Favorite thing about your IT environment?
Openness to test everything and anything we want/need.

Thing you’d most like to change about it?
Burn all Windows and Linux machines. A man can dream! Giving employees too much choice sometimes leads to segmentation and requires more time and attention to maintain.

What’s on your desk?
2017 13-inch MacBook Pro, Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock, Dell U2415, Rain mStand, Apple Magic Mouse and Keyboard, Aiaiai TM-2

What was your proudest professional moment?
Taking over Jamf Pro management and practically rebuilding it from the ground up.

Most cringeworthy request?
I forgot my password.

Do you stay hydrated at work?
100%.

CLI or GUI?
GUI but I am using CLI more and more these days¯\_(ツ)_/¯

DIY or turnkey?
I tend to pay others to build stuff just out of pure time constrictions, but I do enjoy DIY projects.
